David Sprecher accomplished something today that no other competitor has even come close at doing during the 2008 National Rifle and Pistol Championships.
His perfect score of 400-40X set him up to go after an NRA National Record.
The conditions were Smallbore Rifle Prone, Any Sights-Outdoor, 40 Shots-50 yards. Sadly though, Sprecher, who is a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, hit a 10 in his first shot, which eliminated him from any chance at breaking the record. He had to hit the X ring 165 consecutive times, which is a very daunting task to accomplish.
The wind was strong but the skies were clear.
The person who currently holds the record is Mary E. Stidworthy from Prescott, Arizona. Mary was one of the absolute best Smallbore prone competitors of the 70s -- a legend in the shooting community. Mary set this record on June 27, 1976.
(If you’re wondering, David wasn’t even close to the Service National Record in this match. That’s held by P.W. Kendall, who recorded 45 consecutive X rings on March 31st, 1968.)
It was still a very exciting thing to witness.
I’ll post some pictures of this monumental event, and then I have to run off to the Presidents Reception to get some photos.
