Legends of Camp Perry: Carl Bernosky

Carl Bernosky
From time to time for the rest of this year's competition, and in the future on this blog, we'll post brief profiles on people that have made a mark for themselves here at Camp Perry. Today, Steve and I put together little features of two names that are currently in the running for the 2008 National High Power Championships: Carl Bernosky and David Tubb.

A lot can be said about Carl Bernosky: he's quiet, confident, and cautious. Let’s look at his history.

Mr. Bernosky can be considered a legend here at the NRA National Rifle and Pistol Championships. He’s won seven overall national high power rifle championships. From 1977 though 1981, he knocked off an impressive five straight titles. He might be poised to go on one more streak after beating another legend, G. David Tubb, in 2007. Between the two athletes, Bernosky and Tubb have won a combined 18 National Championships.

Look at it in another way: since 1977, either Tubb and Bernosky have taken home the Mumma Trophy an impressive 60 percent of the time.

For Bernosky, it’s not always a given that he’ll come in and take down the field of over 500 competitors, all of whom are vying to add themselves to the folklore of the NRA National Champions. “If I don’t practice, then I’m not going to show up,” Bernosky said during some downtime between relay changes. “I didn’t pick up a rifle until July 4th.”

He wouldn’t make any predictions of how he’ll do during this run, though; he’s ready to take on the challenge that Perry brings to these shooters.

“Camp Perry is a lot more difficult to compete in then say, [the NRA] Bianchi Cup,” Bernosky said. “You’re out here shooting an eight hour work day. You’ll be shooting 60 shots in an hour. With the Bianchi Cup, you’ll shoot 10 shots in 60 seconds, and then you’ll be done for the day.”

To Bernosky, that’s what makes this championship so special.

“It’s long, but it’s fun,” he said. “The ones who can stay near the top will be fighting the last day to win it.
