The 3-Position Awards Ceremony commemorates winners

The awards ceremony took place Saturday, July 19 and brought an end to the 3-Position Smallbore matches at Camp Perry. Honorary guests in attendance included National Rifle Association President John Sigler, NRA 2nd Vice President David Keene and Bill Krilling, renowned international rifle team coach.

Winning the title of National Champion during the 3-Position Smallbore competition was SPC George Norton of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit, with a score of 2374-151X. He received a Frank Parsons Memorial trophy plaque, a gold plated National Championship Medallion, a $500 Visa gift card and KK-300 Walther Match Target Rifle. The value of the rifle was well over $3,000.

Kyle Smith from DuBois, Pa. finished in second place with a score of 2374-122X. In third place was Michelle Bohren from Taylor, Mich. who received a score of 2373-140X, respectively. Smith was the recipient of a silver plated National Championship Medallion, a $300 Visa gift card and an Anschutz model 64 .22 caliber rifle. Bohren received a bronze plated National Championship Medallion, a $200 Visa gift card and an Anschutz model 64 .22 caliber rifle. The three rifles were donated by the NRA.

In his first time back to Camp Perry in seven years, SPC Norton also won third place in the Individual Metallic Sight Competition and was named as the Service Champion. Norton and his rifle team, the United States Army Marksmanship Unit-Blue, were the National Metallic Sight Team Champions and the National Any Sight Team Champions.

“This was an experience that I’ve been looking forward to for a long time,” said SPC Norton.

Smith was selected to represent the United States in the William Drew Cup International Postal Match. Smith and the Pennsylvania Rifle and Pistol Association-DuBois were the High Junior Metallic Sight Team Champions, the High Junior Any Sight Team Champions, they won second place in the Metallic Sight Team Competition and third place in the Any Sight Team Competition. Individually, Smith was titled as the Civilian Champion, the Junior Champion and also won the high expert open award.

“I like Camp Perry because the conditions are more severe than other outdoor ranges,” said Smith.

Other than winning third place overall, Bohren was titled as the Woman Metallic Sight Champion, the Woman 3-Position Champion and Second Place Civilian. She also received second place in the Individual Metallic Sight Competition and third place in the Woman Any Sight Competition.

“Everything went very well at Camp Perry. There were good conditions on the first day; the second day was a little more tough,” said Bohren.

Most of the winners throughout each category received ammunition which was donated by numerous sponsors. Below are photographs of the first places winners in each category of the 3-position competition as they accept their awards during the ceremony.

Alves Trophy
This is the first time that the Alves Trophy has been awarded in the NRA National 3-Position Championship. Originally awarded in New York in 1904, it will now be awarded annually to the high junior competitor in the NRA National 3-Position Metallic Sight Championship. It is donated by the Delaware State Sportsmen’s Association in memory of George Alves. The trophy serves as recognition of Alves’ lifetime dedication to the shooting sports as a coach and mentor to hundreds of junior shooters. Alves was also a long time volunteer at the National Matches at Camp Perry.

Drew Cup
Twelve junior shooters were selected to represent the United States in the William Drew Cup International Postal Match.
