Today begins the longest National Championship here at Camp Perry. The NRA National Smallbore Rifle Prone Championships is a test of one's ability to stay focused for four straight days of shooting.
At this moment, the Prone Metallic Sight Championship, sponsored by Winchester Ammunition, is taking place. The Prone Metallic Sight Championship will be today and tomorrow. Each day is made up of a 1,600 Aggregate score. That means 160 shots are fired in four different matches. Those matches are the Dewar Course Metallic Sight Match, the 100-Yard Metallic Sight Match, the 50-Meter Metallic Sight Match and the 50-Yard Metallic Sight Match.
In my mind, that makes this Championship so special. You can’t lay off or one of the greats will come up from behind and snatch it away from you. You have the Wigger Family in attendance as well as the Tompkins.
