July 8, 2008The governor of the state of Ohio and the president of the National Rifle Association helped to commemorate this year's First Shot Ceremony for the National Matches at Camp Perry.
Early Monday evening, hundreds of volunteers and competitors gathered for the event held at the main flagpole near the Rodriguez Rifle Range.
The 122nd Ohio Army National Guard Band gave a concert before the ceremony, then played music as Ted Strickland, NRA President John Sigler, U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Toledo), U.S. Rep. Robert Latta (R-Bowling Green) and other officials made their entrance.
Four members of the Ohio National Guard's 19th Special Forces jumped from a Chinook helicopter and parachuted to the ground, one of them holding an American flag. The flag was raised by a junior Reserve Officers Training Corps group from Lorain.
Two fighter planes from the National Guard's Tactical Fighter Wing then performed a fly-over.
"These matches are considered the 'World Series' of the shooting world," Strickland said. He mentioned Camp Perry's history during the first and second world wars, and recognized the millions of dollars worth of improvements made there recently.
